I've been reading everyone's posts and I have a dilemma: I have over 6 years of experience in audit and two of those years I have been doing tax work at a very small CPA firm in San Diego (a total of 12 people). The firm has treated me very well over the past two years and I really enjoy working there. I just received my performance review, which was very good and I also got about a 10% raise, which brought me into the mid $70's. Do you think this is good? I know the economy ig going down the tubes, but I don't think my firm will be negatively affected because we're picking up clients rather than losing them. I was expecting more because I just received my CPA license. I was thinking of interviewing at other firms in the area just to get an idea of my market value, but I don't want to risk my current firm finding out that I'm looking.

sandiegoCPA, I would say that the average raise is around 5%. You salary seems to be decent. The CA job market is in a pretty bad shape right now. I don't see too much sense in leaving the company that you like to go to one that you might not like as much because of some $5-10k, which you won't feel anyway thanks to taxes.

Raises at our firm (mid-size regional firm in the Midwest) for those receiving promotions were only 2% this year.  We do a lot of home builders and real estate professionals, and this was a bad year.

The 2% was the same whether going from Staff 1 to 2, Staff 2 to Senior, or Senior to Supervisor.  I have heard from friends at other firms who received raises of 2-5% recently.

All things considered, I don't think I would be upset with a 10% raise.

cheese with that wine? its a blood bath out there; you should be happy with that salary. If you want 6 figures or more without 10+ years experience than I would suggest getting a JD or top 15 MBA. Good economy or bad economy, CPA is a thirty year career to a peaceful retirement.

Your raise is pretty decent even without considering the economy.  The average annual raise is 5%.  I'm in corporate accounting and just got a big promotion into management.  My raise is 18% and I'm happy.  Also, I have 8 yrs corp acctg experience and one thing I learned is that, liking your job/company matters.  If you like where you are but want more money, just ask them.
