What Is the Internet?
The Internet consists of a worldwide system of free-standing computer networks and servers. Each of these computers "serve up" its Web pages when a request is made by a client's browser. For public (non-password) sites, the typing of the Uniform Resource Locator (URL), the formal name of a Web site address (for example, http://www.yahoo.com), from the client's browser constitutes a request to the server to display a particular Web page.
